The Birth of Crystal Shea – A Mother’s Search for Safe, Natural Skincare

Twelve years ago, heavily expectant with my firstborn, I found myself frantically searching for safe skincare products for babies and mothers. I wanted only the best for my baby—every first-time mom does—but what I found in stores left me anxious.

With a background in biochemistry, I examined every ingredient label closely. Many so-called “baby-safe” creams and lotions were full of harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and parabens I couldn’t trust. Around that time, a major baby care brand made headlines for recalling products due to harmful effects on mothers and infants. It was deeply upsetting—and it became a turning point for me.

That moment sparked a personal mission: to find truly gentle, natural, and nourishing skincare for my newborn and myself. My research consistently pointed to the safest choice for delicate and sensitive skin: organic, plant-based ingredients.

One phrase stuck with me: “Feed the skin.”
I had never thought of skincare that way before. But it made perfect sense—just as we nourish our bodies with wholesome food, our skin deserves to be fed with pure, nutrient-rich care.

Time was short—my baby was almost here. Then, in divine timing, I learned of a neighbor (and relative!) selling raw East African shea butter. That conversation became the seed of something far greater.

Shea butter was my first trusted skincare product—pure, unrefined, and deeply moisturizing. I used it from day one on my newborn’s skin and my own. It gave me peace of mind knowing I was protecting and nourishing us with something truly safe.

From that simple beginning, Crystal Shea was born—built on a mother’s urgent search for safety and rooted in science, nature, and love. Today, our mission remains: to create clean, KEBS-certified natural skincare that is safe, effective, and kind to skin—for the whole family.
